Someone gave me an original Cricut Expression, and I read somewhere that even though Cricut DesignStudio has been shelved by Cricut, I can still download the software by a third-party app but I am not sure how to do this.

I have the CD for the Cricut Design Studio that I was able to load onto a new computer successfully; however I need an activation code. When I click on the Activate using the internet I get an error message that internet isn't working (but it is). I've tried also calling the number given and have left a couple of message, but have not received a phone call back. So how do I get an activation code to utilize all of the features Design Studio has to offer.

I spoke to someone yesterday and since design studio has been discontinued there is o possible way he could give me an activation code. I told him it was never gonna be hooked to the Internet to be updated and the computer I was using was running vista. All he would say was sorry, sorry, sorry. But the new design space doesn’t support the original cutter so I’m just out of luck!
You can run the application as long as you have a desktop version of Windows operating system. For example, Surface Pro supports Windows 8, 8.1 and Windows 10. If Cricut DesignStudio supports these operating systems, then you can transfer the setup package and install them. I don't think it will work for Windows RT as that is working in a different mode.
These are the supported operating systems for Cricut DesignStudio:
Windows XP SP2 Windows Vista 32-bit Windows 7 Windows 8, Windows 8.1
I don't think it's possible to download the version you specified of Cricut DesignStudio. The download on the application's page appears to be for the version 1.0.40422.0. You specified a version that is very old, therefore I don't think you will be able to download it again.
Just stick with the current version of Cricut DesignStudio since it has additional features and files.

No, there is no version of Cricut DesignStudio compatible with Windows Surface Pro. The application is compatible with Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista. The Surface Pro is using a totally different Windows version, therefore compatibility doesn't exist anymore.
I have the original Cricut (one of the first ones). Will it work with the Design Studio? Not sure how to tell.

There is no information about this inquiry. I have looked through the DesignStudio's website, but couldn't find anything regarding the compatibility of old application with the new one. However, the only thing that remains now is to install DesignStudio, then simply try loading the older files from the Cricut software.
The latest version of Cricut Design Studio appears to be 1.0.40422. I couldn't find any other build number except this one. Their official website also doesn't offer anything related to its availability, troubleshooting, user guides, updates, etc.

However, some functions from the same applications are not working properly with some machines.
